Providing sport scholarships combines two vital components of sport, but importantly education. Gaining rapid recognition from world renowned sport organisations has proven beneficial and efficient for AWF. However, it was identified by AWF and SportAccord leaders that acquiring support from the highest educational bodies in the world, would propel the AWF program to another level.March 5th provided the initial meeting date for UNESCO and AWF. President Chris Vidal and Vice President Ash Smith travelled to Paris to meet with Mr. Alexander Schischlik, Team Leader of Social and Human Sciences. The purpose of the visit was to address the importance of providing Education through Sport opportunities to build peace in the minds of athletes.
Mr Schischlik was impressed with the presentation, describing the AWF dual career pathway as ‘a solution to a serious global issue’ with UNESCO having recently discussed this very matter internally, only to establish that they ‘did not know what to do’.AWF were enthused, encouraged and motivated to walk away with such complimentary comments from the world’s educational leader, UNESCO. “We knew our model was being well received by sport leaders, and to receive such a positive response from arguably the largest organisation we have met, was a real boost of confidence” mentioned AWF President Chris Vidal.Although a long and lengthy process, AWF will remain in touch with UNESCO, keeping them abreast of their ongoing and rapid developments. AWF has a long term vision to partner and work closely with UNESCO.
